Oh, be careful of the police fund-raising ones. Apparently there are quite a few scammers. I got one of those a few months ago -- they kept trying to badger me to pledge by credit card b/c a check was too inconvenient...

My personal nemesis is some Sprint call center that keeps trying to upsell me on my current contract. I calmly explain that I pay just 30$ a month for 500 anytime minutes, unlimited nights and weekends, unlimited text messaging, and unlimited data (SERO plan). If they could give me a better deal I'd love to hear it. Surprisingly, they actually try to offer me an extra 100 minutes a month for 20 bucks.

I invested in a couple of oil wells about 5 years ago. I still get cold-calls once a week from every oil driller in the world! Don't be nice to these people. If you saw the movie "40 Year Old Virgin", a great response to a telemarketer was "Go F..K Your Mother". Click.

I ask them if the can hold on a minute, and then sit the phone down. I put it back on when the loud blinking noise comes on. I've had them wait for a half hour before.

If you tell them that they are calling a cell phone, they will usually hang up and never call back.

We get a couple calls from long distance numbers every day. When I answer, there is no response. No idea why they call. Our phone gives a special ring for long distance numbers. These days if I hear that ring, I let the answering machine get it. If it's a human they'll leave a message.
