Feed the kid when it's hungry - breast or bottle, mother's choice; give the kid tap water to drink (juice and/or non-fluoridated tap water will guarantee rotten primary teeth).

Actually, NEVER give the kid water to drink until they are already eating solid foods and no longer nursing or taking formula (or are transitioning). It fills up their stomachs, makes them less likely to eat well, and leaves them malnourished. They will get all their fluids from the milk or formula.

Breastfeed as long as you can, if you can. I BF'ed my 2 but couldn't make it to a year. My first hated my milk right at 8 months...for some reason my hormones kicked in and she was repulsed and my second was also just shy of 8 months....my body for some reason changed. Could be a thyroid thing who knows, but I caught grief from the BF militants in my community at the time. I was really turned off w/ the judgemental attitude implying I wasn't trying hard enough.

I have to say my kids gained more weight when they started formula and looked more cherub like but alas now they are back to their skinny bony selves some 7 years later.

No contest: breast is best. And, as far as the mother not being able to contribute economically, I disagree. I worked 3 12-hr shifts per week as an RN and was able to breastfeed both my children to a year. Is it easy to pump 4 times in a 12-hr shift? No, it takes dedication as do many other aspects of breastfeeding. For me, personally, formula feeding was not even considered. Here's one small reason why: first ingredient in most formulas? Corn syrup solids. Can that *possibly* be a good idea?

We should not demonize moms who can't breastfeed. I can't imagine any health care provider counseling a mom not to breastfeed however. Like Perceval said it is free and most studies do show benefits to both mom and baby. Aside from that, formula smells and takes like vomit. Random samples of formula have found everything from plastic parts, melamine, and rocket fuel. Yummy!

The effect sizes from what I know are small but consistently pro breast feeding . I agree that you shouldn't worry too much if you can't feed, but it's definitely worth a good try. This is tailor made free food for your baby. If mom needs a rest, she can pump and dad can bottle feed expressed milk. Most of all, bf means you can travel light as you will always have perfect baby food with you.

Hey..if you can do it, I say go for it. If you can't, don't lose any sleep.

I have 3 kids, bottle fed two and breast fed the last.

They are all geniuses.

Wait! Maybe it is because of MY genetics...no, that can't be it. If I remember correctly, one of them is adopted.

Breast feed or bottle feed...doesn't really matter as long as you remember to feed them!
